So we hit the end of may, and it was bloody sunny. Yay!! Got all of the boxes painted. Now June is here and it’s equally as rainy, so cannae get out to paint boxes again!!

So, just before the end of the festival, I went out on one scorching morning and painted the final box of the festival.  Nice spot, in front of Brighton pier.  The amazing Mr Hopes of  Pooka Photography came along and documented the event and put this rather lovely timelapse together, alongside my favourite remix of Caribou’s SUN –  remixed by FYBE : ONE of Shades of Grey recordings

Along side the Yarn Bomb project. the main project for Brighton Festival was for myself and Snub 23 to brand up some Brighton green boxes in the Brighton Festival styleee.

Got a few done, but the rain has been holding off painting play. Grrr! If it stops then there’ll be more to come in the next few days.

Brighton Festival – Yarn Bombing Project

Collaborations, Commissions, Community, Events, Festivals, Grafik Warfare, Inspiration, Projects

This years Brighton Festival began on Sat 5th May and to help launch the whole shebang I was asked to help deliver a small series of Yarn Bombs.

Yarn Bombing?’ I thought to myself. I was aware of the concept, but I had never knitted anything in my life. And the small amount of time left before the launch of the festival was full of other work to be done and was definitely not the time for me to be learning crochet skills. Luckily I knew just the people to get involved.

My good friend, and fellow artist,  Mazcan had been chatting to me about this street art movement just days before I was asked about the project. She had created some little crochet woolies for some bollards at an event for White Night 2011 in Brighton and had enjoyed it so much that she was now eyeing up lamp posts around town to make their lives a little cosier.

I also know a group of girls who hold a regular ‘Stitch and Bitch’ evening. From this group, a young lady called Tora Huston, who is a whizz with the knitting needles and regularly knits fantastic outfits for festival attire and bizarre toys as gifts for friends. WIN!

Also from this group is a super seamstress extrordinaire by the name of Scarletti. Again, another amazing outfitter who had created such delights as a badger hoodie (MINE!), a sand crab hoodie, Max suit ( where the wild things are), Big Love Yeti fluff and, well, the list goes on and on…

Last and not least, another fabrics whizz and knitter of beards, yes, BEARDS! Charlie Bear or Charlie at Crafternoon. This young lady holds creative workshops and makes costumes for festivals and carnivals and carnival festivals. Never a dull moment at her nipple tassle making workshops, she jumped at the chance to come and do some fabric based art for the breasts, er, I mean streets!

So with knitting needles and sewing machines at the ready, we only had one more task to overcome. How do we get the logo on to fabric.

Cue Monsieur James Alias at Patch-Works.Net. His skill, expertise and embroidery printer completed the look and sealed the deal by creating the Brighton Festival logo in fabric.

With the work now complete, the team took to the streets of Brighton in the dead of night and aided by our 10 foot companion, Scarletti, they were able to reach the tops of the lamp posts. Which was good as we didn’t have a ladder.

The Yarn bombs are now in place and you can see them if you visit New Road in Brighton. They shall be up for the duration of the festival and maybe even longer. Keep an eye out and you may even see more in the near future.

NB: Not all of the lamp posts were ‘Yarn’ Bombed. Some had fabric and applique techniques. No Lamp Posts were harmed in the making of this project.

Today sees the launch of the Brighton Festival street project in conjunction with Grafik Warfare.

You may have seen the wall of AUNG SAN SUU KYI, that we did for last years festival. If not then the post is here

This year we are rolling out a smaller set of images across the city, using the festival branding over the media boxes.

We are also collaborating with a team of Yarn Bombers to add some fabric style Street Art in to the mix.

Keep your eyes peeled around Brighton for the next week or so and you’ll see the work appearing.

Waste Of Space – POP UP shop Preview Launches tonight Thursday 3rd May 6pm -9pm

I have been working with an arts collective called CompARTment for a couple of years now and their ethos is to use empty or disused spaces for arts and events.

Brighton Fringe is once again upon us and this time compARTment have joined forces with other collectives to continue their mission in finding empty spaces.

The Waste of Space project is a collision of  ideas in secret locations through a series of pop-up exhibitions, music, workshops and performances. The aim is for visitors to immerse themselves in a creative trail reviving empty spaces.

The preview of our first pop up opens tonight at 99 Church Rd, Hove. Doors open at 6pm.

Expect to see art from members of all of the collectives and a fresh new gallery space that shall be playing host to many different exhibits, workshops and events over the course of may. Also keep your eyes peeled for our other venues, which shall be updated over May on the Waste of Space site.

I shall be showing some work,  and there will also be a GRAFIK WARFARE showcase happening on the 18th, 19th and 20th May. Expect for there to be amazing new artwork from Grafik Warfare members and friends and also some spray painting and street art workshops.

There is also a launch party on Friday the 5th May upstairs at the Albert.

Wow!! 2012. Here we are. What a great end to 2011 and what a great year for me in respect of some great projects. I hope that 2012 brings even more brilliant opportunities.

At the end of 2011, as you all know, I started painting the media junction boxes around Brighton. This then evolved in to the Grafik Advent project for Dec.

The month saw varied artworks on green boxes all around Brighton from myself and other Grafik Warfare members.

The project was a success, and I now have my work cut out for me and the crew in the next week or so to cover all the Christmas works up. The results of which will be appearing on here.

In the meantime here are a great selection of shots, captured by the brilliant 4FOOT2. He has a great passion for photographing street art and graffiti and spends a good deal of time finding the best spots and getting the best shots. You can see more of his work on his Flickr – Here.

Enjoy.

So only one day left. The project draws to a close and it has been awesome to see so many diverse images go up. Thanks to all on the project. I had hoped for something grand for the finale, however due to rainy weather was unable to do this.

Anyway, Happy Christmas. I hope that you get all that you wish for.

Grafik Advent Dec 17th, 18th and 19th

Sorry, once again, for the delay in posting. Things are getting more and more hectic in the run up to Christmas. There is still work to be done. There are cards to write and also some Christmas shopping to finish. Arrrrrgh. And on top of this the last 5 Advent pics to be done.

The last few days, I have been busy so we have a collection of boxes done by Req1, Stink Like Dog and Snub 23. These fantastic pictures come courtesy of amazing photographer 4Foot2.

As this project has moved along and different artists have become involved, it has been incredible to see the level of artwork being put out there. Grafik Warfare and friends have offered up a range of diversity and skill in producing the boxes. As I say there are 5 days left. Keep tuned in for more awesome work.

Dec 13th Grafik Advent and hello to Ennui and Hipster

Brighton Green Boxes, Collaborations, Doodles, Grafik Advent Project, Grafik Warfare, Media Box painting, Projects

So here we are with more installments of the Grafik Warfare Advent Calendar Street project. Dec 13th sees a Sinna One Snowman in the mix, but no sign of snow just yet. A lot of rain, wind and very cold weather, but no snow.

We also introduce ENNUI to the project and he serves up a rainbow delight. The artist formerly known as Women 158, never fails to impress with his distinctive style and fantastic women characters. Rocking these boxes out in the freezing cold and dealing with dwindling light, he chooses some bright outline colours to cheer up the dullest of days.

The last few days has also seen a guest appearance of new young artist, Hipster. Using emulsion and pen on the box as an alternative to sprays. Hipster is just as talented with spray paint as he is with any other medium and I’m sure you shall see more work by him in future. Better pic of this to follow.

There are still plenty more boxes to be seen around Brighton. Req 1 has been doing some beautiful photorealism of his model Alice. Once I get pictures there will be a post devoted to it.

Grafik ADVENT – 7th, 8th and 9th

Sorry for the late uploads on the newest boxes. The project is very much underway with new additions every day and new artisits on the case. I’ve been busy with an open studio show and haven’t had the time to upload. Here are days 7th – the 9th, by Sinna, Snub 23 and Brighton legend, REQ 1.

Lots more boxes have been done in the last couple of days. Keep an eye out in Brighton.
