Giger’s Alien

Art Schism, Community, Inspiration, Projects, Walls

So once again we are flying through the year and not much is getting updated on this site. But that’s not to say that I haven’t been painting much.

After May I wound it down a little as I had been painting sheep ( on walls and boxes, not painting on sheep!) for Brighton Festival and creating a lot of stencil work. When that was over I wanted to paint something different.

Then HR GIGER died and  I decided to paint a tribute on the side of the Art Schism shop in Brighton.

I wouldn’t say that my work is GIGER influenced, but the impact that his art had on me when I was younger was immense. How could it not be. The detail, the surrealism, the sexual explicitness. The Alien film design.

Thus I chose to honour the great man with a rendition of his famous alien. I used  black transparent paints to sketch out and the technique that REQ had taught me to transpose the form on to the wall.

I then layered up the image with greys, blacks and transparent paint. I didn’t plan the image out, but painted the alien first and then decided to add the detail or a notion of the detail on the background.

Here it is finished.

For the past month myself and REQ have been painting this huge mural on the side of the Prince Albert pub in Brighton.

This project has been a test for me and a great experience as before I painted this mural, I had never painted portraits in my life! Thanks to Req as he shared his immense knowledge and this took me out of my comfort zone.

The wall consists of 25 portraits of dead music icons. John Peel was put here in place of an the old John Peel mural and this is how the project came about.

The full list of icons are from top left to right – Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain,

Donna Summer, Syd Barrett, Jim Morrison, Johnny Cash, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix,

Dusty Springfield, Captain Beefheart, Frank Sidebottom, Sandy Denny, Joe Strummer (Strummerville), Bob Marley, John Peel, Mark Bolan, Michael Jackson, John Lennon,

Brian Jones, Marvin Gaye, Phil Lynott, George Harrison, Elvis Presley, James Brown and Freddie Mercury.

The next phase shall see Keith Moon and Oliver Reed and also Ian Drury added to the bottom right hand side .

The project is now drawing to a close , with just a small amount of wall left to do. ( This is now in addition to the original project, so we are in need of more paint and time!)

You can see more images and progress shots of the wall on the mural Facebook page.

If you are interested in having a wall or some space transformed with a mural then there is no job too big and we can paint anything. For more info or just to give feedback you can fill out the form below. Thanks

Grafik Advent Dec 17th, 18th and 19th

Brighton Green Boxes, Collaborations, Grafik Advent Project, Grafik Warfare, Media Box painting, Projects

Sorry, once again, for the delay in posting. Things are getting more and more hectic in the run up to Christmas. There is still work to be done. There are cards to write and also some Christmas shopping to finish. Arrrrrgh. And on top of this the last 5 Advent pics to be done.

The last few days, I have been busy so we have a collection of boxes done by Req1, Stink Like Dog and Snub 23. These fantastic pictures come courtesy of amazing photographer 4Foot2.

As this project has moved along and different artists have become involved, it has been incredible to see the level of artwork being put out there. Grafik Warfare and friends have offered up a range of diversity and skill in producing the boxes. As I say there are 5 days left. Keep tuned in for more awesome work.
